Our Pastoral and Nurturing Approach
At Takeley, we believe children learn best when they feel safe, valued and emotionally supported. Our pastoral approach is at the heart of everything we do.
Trauma-Informed Practice
All our staff are trained in Trauma Perceptive Practice, which means we understand that some children may have experienced difficulties that affect how they learn and behave. We use trauma-informed strategies to create predictable, safe routines and build trusting relationships with every child.
Restorative Practice
When things go wrong, we focus on understanding what happened, repairing relationships and helping children learn from mistakes rather than simply punishing behaviour.
Well-Being Support
We have established regular well-being check-ins for pupils and comprehensive pastoral support systems, including:
Daily check-ins with class teachers
A dedicated Pastoral, Welfare and Inclusion Leader
Quiet spaces for children who need time to calm down
Teaching about emotions and mental health
Early identification of children who need extra support
Growth Mindset and Positive Affirmations

We use positive affirmations throughout the school day to help children develop confidence and resilience. Each week, we introduce a new affirmation in assembly – such as "I am AMBITIOUS," "I am BRAVE," "I am CAPABLE" or "I am DETERMINED" – which children explore through activities across the curriculum.
These simple, powerful statements help our pupils believe in themselves, embrace challenges and develop the positive self-image they need to flourish.
